Finding Fulfillment in Following God

This May I dedicated my blog to living motherhood as a calling. I spent some time revisiting past posts in which I have reflected on what motherhood has taught me, what makes it beautiful, and what makes it hard.

Many days are hard.

Most days are messy.

Post-Partum depression, overwhelm, irritability, and selfishness are very real things. But so are growth, joy, awe, tenderness, and beauty.

When you are a mom of littles, all the moms whose kids have grown tell you “savor these moments. You will miss them when they are gone.” But, when you are in the throes of motherhood you just want it to end, you want things to change. You want them to grow up, to walk themselves, to feed themselves, to wash their own hair, to be able to wipe their own butts and their own noses, to stop peeing their pants and making messes, to carry their own stuff, to whine a little less and to help a little more around the house. It has been nearly impossible for me to see past the hard most days of my motherhood… but I believe I was given a special grace this month. And that grace is learning to savor this call.

This call is hard and messy and painful and stretching… but it is beautiful nonetheless.

But that’s what a calling IS

A calling isn’t meant to be comfortable, it isn’t necessarily fun, it isn’t even particularly meant to be something you are good at. In fact, our calling often comes in the area of our weakness, because a calling isn’t about what you do, but the person you are meant to be.

So in honor of the call to motherhood this month I want to share some of the posts I have written on this journey toward actually savoring motherhood, in the hopes that some of the things I have learned in my journey might also help you in yours, especially on the days that motherhood is hard.
